Sakura Sunday
Experience Japanese culture with fellow alumni, parents, and friends at the 2015 Subaru Sakura (Cherry Blossom) Festival in Fairmount Park in Philadelphia.

Cost: Free
Registration Required: Click here to RSVP

In Japan, there is a tradition surrounding the blooming of the "sakura" or cherry blossom trees, as a symbol of the transition from winter into spring. Across the islands, people hold "hanami," parties where the Japanese lay out a blanket and celebrate beneath the trees with family and friends. Every year, Philadelphia celebrates its connection with the Japanese people by celebrating the cherry blossoms in Fairmount Park, near the Shofuso Japanese House and Gardens. This family-friendly event features many areas and events with traditional Japanese music, song, dance, drumming, arts and crafts. Vendors sell Japanese-style foods, and there are also tours of the Japanese House.

The Philadelphia alumni club's new president, Sean Duffy AB'99 AM'02 PhD'03, will be on hand to meet alumni and talk about Japanese culture. You will be able to find him, wearing UChicago gear, under a tree near the large fountain, from 1:00 to 2:00pm. Alumni and friends are invited to gather there, picnic, and socialize at that time, and to spend the rest of the day wandering the festival at their leisure.

Festival hours are 10:00am - 5:00pm.
