The University of Chicago is proud to announce that we will be hosting our First Annual Undergraduate Chicago Fire Mock Trial Invitational Tournament on Saturday, January 17 and Sunday, January 18, 2015.

The University of Chicago participates each year in an undergraduate instructional trial advocacy program. Using case materials provided by the American Mock Trial Association (www.collegemocktrial.org), students learn to evaluate facts and legal issues through this program, and to develop a wide variety of important skills by preparing to present their case in a competitive format. Many University of Chicago Mock Trial Team members have gone on to have successful careers in law.

This year’s tournament will take place at the Everett M. Dirksen Federal Courthouse in Chicago. This is a two day, four round tournament, and we are expecting approximately 24 teams to compete this year.

One of our most significant challenges is securing volunteer judges to preside over each round. We are asking seeking attorneys and judges in our community, and UChicago alumni in particular, who are willing to help out and judge at our tournament. You are welcome to judge as few or as many rounds as you wish, depending on your availability. Many outstanding attorneys and judges in the area have already committed their time to help us put on an outstanding tournament. We understand that this would be a commitment of personal time, but we firmly believe it is a very worthwhile program that benefits the participating students greatly.

The dates and times for each round are listed below. The time slots reflect an allotment for a period for registration and a brief judge’s orientation. For morning rounds, we would ask that judges arrive no later than 8:30 a.m., and for afternoon rounds, no later than 1:30 p.m. Continental breakfast and lunch will be served to all judges. Some rounds may be longer than others, so the times listed are meant to reflect the maximum length of time for a given round.
