The Brazilian state of Paraná is undertaking a major new initiative to redefine its criminal justice policies—with an emphasis on assuring respect for human dignity. As part of this initiative, Colm O’Muircheartaigh is launching a data-based investigation of criminal justice in Paraná. O’Muircheartaigh’s project will help the state better understand the practical consequences of its public safety, law enforcement, and judicial policies. In this lecture, he will discuss the project and how it may affect public policy in Paraná.
Colm O'Muircheartaigh is a professor and former dean of the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy and a senior fellow at NORC at the University of Chicago. He is a member of the US National Academies’ Committee on National Statistics and of the US Federal Economic Statistics Advisory Committee; was principal investigator for the National Science Foundation’s Internet Panel Recruitment Survey and coprincipal investigator for NSF’s Data Research and Development Center; and is co–principal investigator on the National Institute on Aging’s National Social Life Health and Aging Project.
